The hands as roots of the soul
There is a word I hear often in spiritual conversations — "the body is an antenna, we capture energy, we transmit vibration". It's not wrong, but to me it sounds cold. An antenna is a machine. You are not a machine.
I want to share with you the metaphor that came to me through feeling, and that changed the way I practice energy work.
Imagine a tree
The roots are not in plain sight, but it is through them that the tree's life threads itself into the earth. It is through them that the tree drinks, sustains itself, breathes from below. Without roots, the rest doesn't happen.
In you, it's similar — only the other way around.
Your hands are the roots of your soul in matter.
Your arms are the branches that depart from the center of you and spread out into the world. Different directions. Different paths. Different possible touches in every hour of the day.
Where your soul passes through
Think of everything you do with your hands during a day:
- When you write a message to someone
- When you cook
- When you hug an animal
- When you stroke the head of a child or a parent
- When you hold a glass of water
- When you plant a seed
- When you play an instrument
- When you reach out and touch the bark of a tree
All of this is your soul entering matter. Through the roots that are your hands.
This is not empty poetic metaphor. It's a practical description. When you do something with your hands with conscious presence, you are literally letting your essence pass into matter.
When you do the same thing in a hurry, distracted, frustrated — that also passes. But something else passes. Hurry. Distraction. Frustration.
The heart is the center
Before you reach the hands, there is the heart. The cardiac chakra pumps — it does not pump only blood. It pumps presence, sensing, intention. Your essence comes from the center of you and expands through the whole body.
It rises to the head. It descends to the belly. It extends through the arms. It ends at the fingertips.
So when you use your hands with awareness, remember: the energy does not originate there. The energy is born in the heart and flows through the roots outward.
Include all bodies
When I write "the hands" I am speaking of one way of sensing among many. There are people who do not have hands. There are people who do not have arms. There are people who do not see. This does not stop you from anything.
The roots of the soul also pass through the feet that touch the ground. Through the face that catches the wind. Through breath. Through the sense of sound. Through imagination. Through the eyes when you see. Through presence when you are.
If this text is about hands and you don't have that pathway, adapt. The soul finds its way. Always.
A simple practice for this week
Choose a daily activity — it could be washing the dishes. Yes, washing the dishes.
For one week, every day, during this task:
- Notice your hands
- Feel the water, the temperature, the texture
- You're not "passing time" — you're letting your soul pass through your hands to clean this small piece of matter
- Finish by saying (inwardly): "thank you, hands."
You'll notice something strange: the task becomes slower, but also less heavy. This is the meaning of doing with presence.
A phrase to take with you
I am a living channel. My hands are the roots of my soul in this matter. Through them passes what resonates with me. I trust what I feel.
